This six-week intensive seminar introduced students to the field of disaster history by focusing on four categories of natural disaster: floods, fires, storms and earthquakes. The course highlighted the most destructive/expensive/deadly disasters in American history – the Midwestern fires of 1877 (including the Chicago fire), the Johnstown flood of 1889, the Galveston hurricane of 1900, the San Francisco earthquake (and fire) of 1906 and the tri-state tornado of 1925.
